Mediterranean. Broadly conical, evergreen. Dark green leaves aromatic when crushed, used in cooking. Forms a dense screen, clips well as a hedge. spacing 500-700mm. Thrives in coastal areas.

Narrowly conical when young, evergreen. White flowers in profusion from Dec. worked by bees. Tolerates exposed, wet and infertile sites. Useful nurse shrub for native revegetation projects.

An evergreen forest canopy tree from Thames southwrds in the North Island (except Mt Taranaki), & throughout the South Island in lowland to montane forests going into sub-alpine scrub.

Small evergreen tree found in wetter areas throughout NZ most frequently at higher, cooler altitudes and in frosty valleys. Leaves are long soft, parallel-sided with many small marginal teeth. Bark is smooth and light brown. Flowers are small in clusters most abundant on woody twigs below the leaves, yellow for female, purple for males on separate trees, flowering mid-winter to early summer. Fruits 4-6mm dark purple late winter to late summer.
