Mountains of Japan. Crown conic and rounded, evergreen. Needles curved giving impression of blue grey colour. Popular as a bonsai subject, slow growing. Rare in NZ.

Collected from seed from the natural crossing of many different known female parent trees. Seed is collected from Proseed orchards established from 2007-2011. Topped @ maximum height 40cm.

Pittosporum 'Stephens Island' is a form found growing on Stephens Island in the middle of Cook Strait. It has some resemblance to both Pittosporum tenuifolium and Pittosporum crassifolium (or may be a naturally occurring hybrid between P. tenuifolium and P. ralphii). It has a tidy habit with and upright medium form and will grow to a mature height of 5-10m. The small pointed foliage is smooth, blue/grey-green with a slight grey/green tomentose appearance. It adapts well to coastal conditions.

Narrowly conical initially then broadly spreading, deciduous. Small juvenile leaves and vigorous narrow erect habit make it ideal as a nurse tree for more tender plants. NZ wide except the driest coldest parts.
