Central and E USA. Broadly spreading, deciduous. Red tinged new leaves turn green, and purply bronze in autumn. Habitat in upland woodlands with good drainage. Acorns are small and bitter. The wood can be split to make shingles.

Japanese spruce Ht 25-35m
Central Honshu, a tall conical evergreen tree, similar to Picea abies from Europe. Branchlets and mature cones are a dark reddish brown. Collected from Central Otago, where it thrives.

Monocalypt, generally free of insect pests..Tallest hardwood tree, native to mountain ranges of Southern Victoria and Tasmania. Grows on fertile soils with regular rainfall. Higher altitude origins tolerate snow and frost. Valuable pale timber for interior building, marketed as Tasmanian oak. Flowers in summer.
