Broadly conical, evergreen. Shiny, silver-green leaves 3-7cm long. Tiny flowers, dark red, then green to black capsules with sticky black seeds. Good shelter & screening tree. Throughout NZ except Westland, where P. colensoi takes over.

Broadly conical, evergreen. Shiny, yellowy-green leaves 10-15cm lemon scented when crushed. Terminal clusters of sweetly-scented cream flowers. Good shelter and screening tree, found throughout NZ except in the cold, dry areas.

Kahikatea (2 yrs old) Ht 30-40m
NZ white pine. Narrowly conical for many years, evergreen. Will tolerate very wet sites and grow in drier sites with good grass control. Tolerates shade but does best with blue sky above. Shade the trunk with shrubs to prevent sun scorch. Long lived. 2 years old.

European hornbeam (2 yrs old) Ht 15-20m
Broadly spreading, deciduous. A tough hedgerow and woodland tree. Popular for trimmed formal hedges. The timber is very hard and used for turnery. Yellow autumn colour. We also recommend Fagus sylvatica as a good alternative for a clipped hedge. 2 year olds - HEDGE spacing 30-60cm

Japanese cedar (2 yrs old) Ht 30-40m
Broadly conical, evergreen. Withstands wind well, including salt laden winds in Westland. Good Kiwifruit shelter where it is trimmed annually to 0.5m width. Suggested spacing 1.5 to 2.5m . Major timber tree in Japan. Less vigorous in colder drier South Island areas. 2 years old.

Harakeke or swamp flax Ht 2-3m
NZ evergreen. Broad erect green or bluish-green blades, erect tall flower heads in spring attract nectar feeding birds. Seed pods stand erect. Favours wet sites but adaptable. Used for shelter in exposed moist coastal sites.
